‘I don’t want to dwell on the past. We’ve such a brilliant future
ahead of us. We’re going to do so much after the
war…’
But fate has other plans for flight engineer
Raymond Barnes and his fiancée, Hazel Boardman.
Based on real
life events in Salford, this is a new play by local playwrights Pat
and Roy Greenhalgh. It follows the life of Hazel in the months
leading up to the fateful crash of a Lancaster bomber, call sign ‘PB
304 - S for Sugar’, onto Littleton Rd. playing fields in July
1944.
Lucy Bamford, a local clairvoyant from Regatta St. who
died as a result of the crash, had predicted her own death and seen
the tragedy of love that forms the background of this bittersweet
drama. Based on research and interviews with those who knew the
characters, this play about community, superstition and the age long
universal search for love, is set against the background of wartime
Salford. ‘S for Sugar’ is an exciting drama that, with video
projections and period costumes, vividly and authentically brings to
life the story of one girl’s struggle to embrace the future in those
frightening and uncertain times.
These premiere performances
are an innovative partnership between professional artists and the
local community, with financial support from Manchester Airport,
North West Arts and Salford City Council. The play is directed by
Dinos Aristidou, a theatrical globetrotter who has recently been
working on projects in Vienna, the USA, and, nearer to home, The
Lowry.
This is a new play written by Pat & Roy Greenhalgh
