Description AN EXCITING NEW DRAMA, BASED ON THIS
BOOK, IS CURRENTLY BEING PRODUCED BY WISE MONKEY THEATRE.
Joe
Bamford’s book is a factual account about a Lancaster bomber - PB304
S, which crashed near to Langley Road, a densely populated area of
Salford, on Sunday 30th July 1944, whilst attempting a crash landing
on Littleton Road Playing Fields. The bomber was carrying 9000lbs.
of bombs from an aborted raid over France. As well as the crew of
seven, there were two civilians killed and sixty nine injured. One
of the civilians who died was the author’s grandmother and one of
the crew members was a local man who’s family lived two miles from
the scene. The cause of the crash has never been properly
established.
The book is factual and detailed and would suite
those with an interest in Second World War aviation, as well as
those who are interested in the history of the area. The author
joined the Royal Air Force in nineteen sixty eight, and his expert
knowledge comes across in the content of the book. The book is
logical in its approach and contains chapters on biographies of the
crew of PB304 S, operational training for bomber crews, the team
spirit of crews, actual accounts of raids, and the events
surrounding the crash. The final chapters cover the aftermath of the
crash and the setting up of a memorial to the crew in Agecroft
Cemetery, Salford.
The book is very readable and is well
researched. One minor criticism is that a glossary of terms would be
helpful to the ‘lay’ reader. As I was a young child at the time of
the crash and lived only a few miles away, I was particularly
interested in this book. As well as technical aspects, the book
brings out the human side of the tragedy both from the civilian and
air crew viewpoint. I look forward to future books by Joe Bamford.
