Description This four CD talking book covers the
origins of classical music from 600AD to the present day. It is
informative and accurate, as well as being relaxing to listen to
with the narration and music samples having been particularly well
recorded.
If you were uncertain what a modal scale was
before hearing this CD you certainly wouldn't be after. This brings
me to suggest that any music or music history student would be well
on their way to a distinction if they invested in this CD set.
That's not to say that anyone with an interest in classical music
would not thoroughly enjoy hearing the music of minimalist Steve
Reich in comparison to Claude Debussy on the same CD, or discover
far more about the way politics, art and music are intrinsically
linked.
Robert Powell's warm voice tells a larger story than
simply facts and dates. The booklet included with the CD charts
political events to composers life spans, which, if studied, would
raise your standing at pre-Barbican dinner parties so all in all
definitely worth a listen.
