Description Billy Hopkins, the author of this
book, was born in the Collyhurst district of Manchester in 1928 and
we follow the life of Billy and his family through the thirties and
fourties.
This is a book that I found myself compelled to
read at any spare moment such is the strength of characters within
the pages. The reader gets so involved with the family and their
trials and tribulations you will find yourself smiling, laughing and
supressing a tear, all within a few pages.
The author takes
you on a trip to a bygone age when the local priest was a man to be
feared and schoolteachers had never heard the expression, 'spare the
rod'. Set in a time before computers, TV and videos, where the
family sit together to listen to the wireless and a trip to the
pictures is a big treat. If you are of an age where you wonder how
we managed without life's 'essentials' then read Our Kid and the
answer leaps out from the pages at you. Even if you have never set
foot in Manchester, you will enjoy this book, as it is a story of
life and values that are universal.
